If you have gone through the earlier Facebook privacy document, it was longer than the United States constitution and that is also without amendments!! Fortunately, all these guidelines have become more understandable and clear to an average user now. The do up seems to have come across for all such users and competitors who are digging at the loopholes with the policies. With the revamp, Facebook is intending its users to undue criticism along with keeping them well informed.

People normally wonder about what Facebook does with the User info and it is sells it to the advertisers? After receiving complaints from users and being under scrutiny regarding this impenetrability of the prior documents, Facebook accepted the fact stating that it has been agreed that the privacy policies should be and can be more easily understood, and this is something that inspired the team to try out something different. Now, Facebook has a user-friendly legal document and still it is in process and has not yet been adopted officially in the permanent Facebook Handbook.

According to the Wall Street Journal, privacy and product counseller for Facebook Edward Palmieri, decided that the social media networking giant requires having a clean cut and simple privacy policy. The insecurity by users have been acknowledged and further stated that users should believe that we do not sell their information to the advertisers at all.

Mark Zuckerberg ‘attacked by hackers’

Hackers have recently targeted Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and chief executive of Facebook.

Few days back, the Zuckerberg’s fan page on Facebook was been attacked by hackers; they took over it and posted certain messages were pretending to be him such as; “Let the hacking begin: If Facebook needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn’t Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a ‘social business’ the way Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus described it? http://bit.ly/fs6rT3 What do you think? #hackercup2011.”

Right after the message was being posted, it was ‘Liked’ more than 1,800 times, attracting approximately 500 comments. All the Facebook users- no matter they are famous or not are required to take utmost care of their social networking security; senior technology consultant at internet security firm Sophos named Graham Cluley was stating this. He further stated that Zuckerberg would want to take a close look at his security and privacy setting after such an embarrassing breach. Although, it has not been cleared until now if he was being careless with his account password, if he was phished or h was been side jacked while making use of an unencrypted wireless network; nevertheless, it happened. It simply made its users uncertain while Facebook is trying to reassure them regarding the security and privacy settings in a serious manner.

The Zuckerberg’s fan page has been removed from the portal and it has refused to give any statement on the security breach. However, the screenshots of the hacked page can be seen here. This breach came in soon after the account of Nicolas Sarkozy; French President’s was also breached.

30,000 people quit Facebook in Protest!

Large groups of users are protesting against the Facebook’s privacy policies, and it has been reported that more than 30,000 people heeded the call to abandon Facebook, the social networking giant.

The protesting group states that for us it is about two things, best intentions, and fair choices. In our point of view, Facebook does not do well in either department. Although, Facebook provides you with choices about how to manage your information, however, they are not the fair choices. The group reported that 32,749 users have dropped out from the Facebook’s universe.

According to Google data; 540 million people, who are distinctive in nature, monthly visit Facebook, which is to some extent around 35 percent of the entire Internet community.

Facebook is re-developing the privacy controls in the face of a hail of condemnation that it is betraying the trust and confidence, which has made it the world’s largest and leading social media network.

Facebook revamped its privacy control settings page to endow with a single control for content, which will be useful in “significantly reducing” the amount of information that is always visible to everyone. Facebook also claimed that it is providing its users with more control over websites or third-party applications to access the user’s information.

The critics are continuously demanding Facebook to make every users information extremely private as default, and let people allow all by themselves as what they want to share and what not.

Again, we can just wait, and watch what Facebook comes up with this time, and all we can expect is that it is providing its users with the privacy controls as per expectations or not!

Facebook’s New Privacy Roll Out!

Facebook has rolled out its new privacy settings. Lets  see if this time, Facebook has tried covering up the holes or not. Below is the break down, which you should know;

  1. One Control to Rule All: Facebook has announced it that now there will be just a single privacy setting for the entire account. This actually saves every Facebook update after you login, and individually changing all of your settings to “Only Friends” or whatever you choose. The control will be working historically, which means that all the previous contents will be blocked, and the future contents should not be seen. The present controls will also be available to the users to make the change according to what they want.
  2. Less information is available to public now: the default settings at Facebook enabled people to see who you are, and who are your friends, and also about which pages you are a fan of. However, now, these default settings have been scaled back, and will no longer be allowing people to see your information unless you permit them.
  3. Less access given to the Third Party Apps: third party apps will be given limited access to your personal information, unless you appreciate them
  4. Unplugging entirely from Games & Apps: Facebook users will be able to simply unplug entirely from accessing games and third party apps. You do not have to send an annoying message to your friends to join certain application or game. You can just select as not being a part of that particular apps or activity at the corner of Facebook world at all.

What’s the actual Catch?

Zuckerberg states that it is recommended to keep these setting open to every person, referring to the basic info, people you are friends with, and the pages you are a fan of. He further adds that if you changing these settings will make you hide from those people who are searching for you, whereas you can control the setting individually, and you can still hide information, leaving your identity open to public searching. Facebook is a business, and it does not prefer that anyone hide its publicly available information.

The question here arises that will the critics that has been occurring in the last few days will be satisfied or not?

Making it short, the word is Yes! It is expected that Facebook will now give its users will clear privacy settings, and brief access to every users’ privacy controls and settings. Facebook should realize the power has strength that comes from its users, and their satisfaction should be the prior concern. And, in case Facebook does not cater to the concerns of its users, they will indeed be losing the greatest social networking market share, and soon would be dead. Time will make the users decide if the step taken by Facebook should be applauded or still Facebook has to cover a long way to attain perfection and confidence!

Canada on Facebook- it’s getting awful!

Facebook is having a bad time these days! And it has heard that soon it will appear before a federal judge in Canada. This enduring controversy is concerned with the privacy settings of Facebook. The case is filed against Facebook as it has violated some rules against Canadian private-sector privacy acts.

There are privacy settings can be adjusted according to your needs and requirements, but actually they are extremely complicated and difficult to understand fully. Because of this, users have been already asking Facebook to make it easier and comfortable for them. Lots of people have experienced this while they are even editing their personal Facebook settings according to what they need, and everyone just had trouble with it. Canadian officials are taking appropriate investigations and steps and will be taking Facebook to court for certain! Even the Canadians and most of the people belonging to other countries are wondering that where their personal information is going. It is a common knowledge that Facebook share your personal information with companies that are creating different applications.

In case, your information has also been shared, then it’s certainly your fault! If you do not want your information and personal information go public then it is advised not to sign up for Facebook. Facebook undoubtedly is a useful tool, but only if it is USED as a PRACTICAL AND CONTRUCTIVE TOOL!!

Facebook is becoming Disgraced book

Now, I do not like Facebook because of its stance on privacy concerns, I believe that an outright witch is hunting against Facebook, and it is not at all reasonable, and as it is not intentional, it could have come worse for the entire social networking giant.

Various social networking web portals have been already accused of sharing user’s personal data and information with the advertisers. This mainly includes the online IDs and the names that allow all the ad companies to discriminate particular users. As far as the Facebook’s case is concerned, the advertisers could easily see that from which users profile the clicks were coming. I mean come on Facebook, we being the user’s have an intervention with you because we thought you have the best privacy policies, but on the other hand, you are sharing it with the ad companies is simply intolerable not just for me but most of the public users. According to an article published by PC world, when asked from the users about the privacy concerns of Facebook, 60% of the users said that they are going to quit Facebook.

Apparently, MySpace and Facebook instantaneously stopped the secret user information sharing, when they were questioned about the privacy concerns. And this is because, at this time, it is really going to make a difference for them. It is just that you do not get angry but actually feel disappointed, as you cannot expect this to get right ever because the social media giants are not going to change themselves ever at all.

Facebook Privacy : My Boss Shouldn’t know what I am doing on Facebook

While the survey has been conducted in Malaysia, but this study can be applied anywhere in the world. According to this secure survey, 73% of the respondents haven’t added  their Bosses as friends on Facebook. The reason is pretty obvious i.e. the privacy concerns. No one really wants their Bosses to track what they are actually doing on Facebook its because it would negatively affect their jobs for sure.

With the revised Facebook privacy policies, many people have serious privacy concerns . Back in 2009, many people have deleted their photo albums when the profile picture went public and could be shown to the users who are not in the friends list. According to the survey by F-secure, almost 56% of the respondents have backed up their photos from Facebook.  Employed people have great concerns about these new Open privacy policies because now they have to be careful while sharing anything, commenting on someone’s status. In a nutshell, they can’t do anything openly like they used to be.

Facebook getting too much personal!!!

We are living in a era of Information technology where social media networking is of the key factors which has become a part of our daily routine. We share lots of stuff over social media sites like facebook.

Facebook is the largest network of social networking site with tens of millions of active users. Facebook has recently made some new changes in the privacy settings so now more information is publicly available which includes your city, education, interests and also friends. The pages with the button “Become a fan” have turned into “LIKE” button and the pages you LIKED will become a part of your profile that is publicly available to the world.

So under the old privacy settings, one could easily write “Swimming” or “Cooking” as your interests and still hide them from the public but Thanks to Facebook for the new settings which has made people’s life more miserable by removing this system and now the randomos can search also by filtering results based on interests. So things you share becomes a in the knowledge of outer world even if you don’t want to . But Thanks to U.S senators who have taken action against these new privacy settings and asked Facebook to roll back to the previous ones. On 27th April, the US senetaor, have also written a letter to Zuckerberg in which they have asked them to roll back the recent changes Facebook has made. Now lets see how he responds.
